Walking and Hiking around Alora

Hike #1 - The Top of La Huma:

  • Total time: 4 hours 30 minutes
  • Driving Time, Return Trip 33.8 km. /1 hour 10 minutes
  • Hike: 3 hours 20 minutes
  • Level of difficulty: Demanding

Description of the hike:

This is quite a demanding hike, but incredibly well worth it. After a short drive from Alora Valley View Accommodations, you will park your car and then begin your hike. The beginning is relatively a constant upwards climb with the occasional flat parts, it is the last part towards the top that is the most demanding for some people. Along the entire route are fantastic views of the valley and the surrounding areas. At the top you can see for miles in every direction. Make sure to bring a lot of water and a good size lunch and make a day of it. The effort is totally worth it!

The Drive to the Start:
1. 11.4 km: Take the El Chorro road.

2. 0.8 km: Take a right over the dam, then the first sharp swing to the right towards the train station.

3. 2.9 km: Continue past the train station and a hotel on your right hand side. The road will come to a split at the first steep hill, it is here that you will turn left, signed ”Valle de Abdalajis”. Continue to drive until you come to an intersection marked ”Sendero Sierra de Huma”.

4. 1.8 km: Continue on a gravel road and after 1.5 km the road will split again, here you will turn right and continue for another 300 meters. Stop when you come to a small sign that says Abdalajis to the right and El Chorro to the left and park the car.

The Hike:
1. 20 min: Follow the gravel road to the right towards Abdalajis. Walk until you come to an old cabin/house where there is just the foundation left.

2. 15 min: Walk 20 meters past the foundation and take a left on to a small path. You will follow this path until it splits.

3. 10 min: Walk to the left and follow this path/gravel road until you come almost to the base of the mountain. When the path/gravel road swings to the left and a bit downwards, it is here you must go right onto a small path.

4. 1 hour 20 min: You will now walk up the hill with La Huma on your left hand side. It is here that you will most likely not be able to keep to the path all the time, but don´t despair. Try to keep to the left closest to the mountain side, until you come to the top of the hill. Walk until you come to a fence that has many planted trees on the other side. Go to the left on the path which goes along the fence and follow the natural upwards increase to the mountain. It is very steep here. At the top take a right to get to the highest point where you will see a small cement “block”.

5. 1 hour 15 min: Go the same way back.
